The Sejong Center for the Performing Arts started out in 1961 as Unam Hall. It opened in its present form on April 14, 1978, to replace the Civil Hall, which had been destroyed in a 1972 fire. Recognized today as one of the world’s premier performance venues, it has been a gateway for the Korean performing arts and the country’s only avenue for international performing arts. During the 1970s and 1980s, it was Korea’s major cradle for high art. Maintaining a reputation for over two decades as the country’s leading culture and arts institution, it was reclassified as a foundation in 1999 as part of a new step forward for the 21st century.
