Once a key “exporter” of emigrants since the first major migration of Koreans to Hawaii in 1903, Korea has now become a major recipient of immigrants with the sharp increase in foreigners coming to the country. The exhibition will provide a visual representation of the mass movement of migrant workers and marriage immigrants which soared in number in the 1980s as well as the recent national discourse on granting asylum to refugees. Each artist will provide his or her visual interpretation of the various phenomena related to the realities of each era and migration in Korea. The exhibition will warily steer clear of sentimental diagnosis or superficial illustration of migration that would only serve to reinforce the erroneous awareness on the issue. Instead, it will propose a multi-layered approach to the various situations of migration. Ultimately, the exhibition will portray migration as a dynamic activity intended to change lives, focusing on the subjectivity of migration and the specificity of individual beings. The exhibition will address not only human migration but also the moving of plants and materials in the context of neoliberal economy. The exhibition will feature works collected and interpreted by Korean and Taiwanese curators based on the common key word: 《Moving & Migration》. Inaugurating at the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts, “Moving & Migration” travels to the Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art in July, 2019.
