The Asian Art Biennial, hosted by the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, will be held in Taichung from 5th October 2019 to 9th February 2020. For this year's edition, artists Hsu Chia-Wei and Ho Tzu Nyen will curate the exhibition, titled “The Strangers from Beyond the Mountain and the Sea.” The ‘stranger’ in the title of the exhibition is inspired by the ancient Japanese word marebito, which the Japanese folklorist Orikuchi Shinobu (1887–1953) described as supernatural beings that come from afar with gifts. For the curators, the term includes “the form of the migrant, the ethnic minority, the colonist, the foreign merchant, the smuggler, the partisan, the shaman and the traitor—figures that are conduits to an unknown outside, and who channel forces that test the very limits of our sense of self, our society, and our species.” The 7th Asian Art Biennial will present both existing works and new commissions by 33 artists and artist groups, including two Korean artists Lee Ufan and Park Chan-kyong, to spark the imagination and curiosity of viewers by expanding the limits of our existing knowledge systems through the perspectives of “strangers” and extending the frameworks by which reality is understood.
