Sound Effects Seoul 2019, the 6th edition and 12th year of Korea’s first festival of sound art, presents this edition’s theme: “Echo Chamber”. Besides being an acoustic phenomenon that also accurately describes the properties of the concrete exhibition spaces at its headquarters Alternative Space LOOP in Hongdae, “Echo Chamber” is currently used metaphorically to describe a condition where certain ideas, beliefs or data points are reinforced through repetition in a social system. In such an echo chamber, certain ideas or positions come to dominance due to the social and institutional properties of the space, where the ideas continue to resonate much longer than they would have in the open. The participating artists for Sound Effects Seoul 2019 present works that explore resonance, reverberation, repetition and memory as well as self-reflectivity, confirmation bias and fake news. This edition’s invited artists will exploit sound art’s particular propensities and potential for temporal layering and synaesthetic immersiveness to produce evocative environments where current concerns about loss of critical distance, individual agency and social resilience are reflected and reconsidered.
