The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art will present the solo exhibition of 《Nam June Paik》 through October 3, 2021. As the museum states, Nam June Paik was one of the first truly global artists who foresaw the importance of mass media and new technologies, coining the phrase 'electronic superhighway' in 1974 to predict the future of communication. The exhibition presents his multicisciplinary and collaborative practice that encompassed art, music, performance, and technology, all related with traditions from both Eastern and Western cultures.
Rudolf Frieling, a curator of media arts at SF MOMA said, "Nam June Paik is famous for beeing the historic father of video art, but his grondbreaking and contemporary influence is even more based on his crossover between all media." And he also said, "Paik's radical visual and musical aesthetic has a natural home here on the West Coast as a place for global connectivity."
The Museum presents 200 over works across all media, from early compositions and performances to large-scale video installations and global satelite projects. Organized by SF MOMA and Tate Modern, this retrospective exhibition will be the first major show in the USA in over 20years and the first every large-scale show of his work on the West Coast.
