Tina Kim Gallery presents the second solo exhibition of Kim Tschang-Yeul《The Stillness of Water》 through October 16th, 2021. The exhibition focuses on his different modes of forms and media through the experimental paintings that were mostly produced betweeen the 1980s and 1990s.

His first solo exhibition was held in 2019, with works from the 1960s to 1980s. This exhibition continues to follow his work chronologically. The exhibition will examine the evolution of the artist's signature motif : the drop of water. He devoted his life-long career to draw the drop of water.

He purposely avoided depicting the drop as hyper-realistic, which naturally led him to find new canvas supports.These supports are jute, sand, wood, and newspaper. The year of 1979 is considered a turning point for Kim Tschang-Yeul, as he began transitioning away from strictly airbrush techniques. He started to incorporate paintbrush work to engender the pictorial formativeness of the motif itself. Thus, from 1980s and onward, the water drops became fuller and more diverse in their forms, scales, projections, and compositions.

He further incorporates new elements in his practice in Waterdrops(1995). In this painting, a flat patch of black paint disrupts the trompe l'oeil. And then, in Waterdrops(1996), he also use a thick cloud of coloful pigments,showing the impasto on the canvas. His experimentationscrystallized into drops of water in perpetual stillness.
