Gallery Hyundai is presenting a solo exhibition of Kang Seung Lee through December 31, 2021. Artist Kang Seung Lee challenged the mainstream historical narrative by creating works that visualize the forgotten or excluded minorities. ‘𝘉𝘙𝘐𝘌𝘍𝘓𝘠 𝘎𝘖𝘙𝘎𝘌𝘖𝘜𝘚,’ held in Gallery Hyundai, focuses on queer communities by generation, region, and period as he tries to have intelligent conversations across time and space.

It showcases over 40 new works in a diverse mixture of media that include graphite drawings and gold thread embroidery on Sambe—allusions to life and death, the frailty of beauty and the fleeting nature of memory—as well as paintings on transformed canvases, ceramics, garment, artist books, film footage, and Polaroid images. In his exploration, he rediscovers data on historical events (AIDS epidemic, the 1992 Los Angeles Uprising) and figures (including artists such as Robert Mapplethorpe, David Wojnarowicz, Peter Hujar, Martin Wong, Yato Tamotsu, Alvin Baltrop, Derek Jarman, Tseng Kwong Chi, Goh Choo San, and queer civil rights activists such as Joon-soo Oh).

Lee reconstructs their achievements and heritage into the world from a cultural, artistic, and political perspective using graphite drawings, Sambe and gold thread embroidery, ceramics, and neon.
