The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (MMCA) presents The Museum-Carbon-Project as part of its 2022 Performing Arts program from 19 August to 30 October 2022.
The MMCA announced its goal of becoming a future-oriented, ecological museum responsive to climate change. As part of the program MMCA Performing Arts 2022, The Museum-Carbon-Project reflects on how the museum should stay aware and responsive to global climate change from a multidisciplinary point of view.
As the first step, the MMCA calculated the amount of carbon emitted in the process of hosting a single exhibition, based on which 15 projects including presentations, discussions, and workshops were devised to mediate discussions on the exhibitive practice and related activities. First in line, the discussion session “Discussion on Carbon Emissions at Contemporary Art Museums” will overview contemporary grounds for carbon emission calculation and how the museum’s carbon output was calculated. Another discussion session, “ESG at Museums” will examine how ESG (environmental, social, and corporate governance), or a governance structure that takes into account the non-financial achievements of fulfilling environmental and social responsibilities, has become an important factor in this age and how museums should approach this concept.
