Shim Moonseup, Sculpture of Nature

14 July 2017 - 09 Oct 2017

Venue: MMCA (Gwacheon)

The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art is set to hold Korean Contemporary Artists Series: Shim Moonseup. Shim (b. 1943) won a series of awards at the National Art Exhibition of the Republic of Korea in the late 1960s, took part in the Paris Biennale from 1971 through 1975, and won grand prize at the second Henry Moore Grand Prize Exhibition in 1981 for his “Opening Up” series. He participated in the special exhibition of the Venice Biennale in 1995 and 2001 and held exhibitions at the Palais-Royal in Paris and the Museum of Asian Arts in Nice. Since the early 1970s, Shim has continued to express non-materialistic symbolism out of materials such as wood, stone, soil and steel through his works such as "Opening Up," "Thoughts on Clays," "Wood Deity," "Metaphor" and "The Presentation" series. The upcoming exhibit will examine the search for materiality in Korean sculpture and is expected to serve as an opportunity to find its meaning.
