Press release

Gyeonggi Cultural Foundation (GGCF) is delighted to announce the opening of Those except public, art and public art, an archive exhibition of its ongoing public art projects. GGCF has been organizing annual public art projects traveling around Gyeonggi-do, the most populous province in South Korea.

With the contribution of curators, artists, architects, art critics and computer programmers, the exhibition interrogates the relationship between the notion of public and art through different lenses— place, history, culture, system and environment. Six independent projects allow a broad reflection on the fundamental aim of and discussions around public art. The projects are embodied in various forms from collected materials, idea sketches and drawings to photographs, videos as well as installations, demonstrating different artistic attempts to make interventions in the public realm.

Presented projects include Subtopia that investigates the geography of suburban areas through the case of Yongin-si, Change Nothing that poses questions about public art and publicness, Last Place that explores unbuild spaces and Singal that traces back a place in the memory. Also, the forum "MEETING&TALK: On Art and Online Art Platforms Shared and Interacted with the Public" will review case studies of recent online platforms that have been producing knowledge of visual art and shared culture to speculate the possibility of art as a public property and means of sharing.

Distancing itself from the senseless productions and rash conclusions, a series of forums, performances and workshops including Coding Everybody will revisit with the audiences the implications of art and the public sphere that haven’t been addressed. As a platform for discussion, the exhibition will critically view today’s public art, seeking for alternative practices and the expansion of the public sphere.
