The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (MMCA, Director Bartomeu Marí), presents Choi Jeonghwa, an artist who explores the Korean identity on an international scale. Sponsored by Hyundai Motor, the MMCA Hyundai Motor Series is a ten-year annual project begun in 2014 devoted to spotlighting prominent Korean artists via their own solo exhibitions. By offering the opportunity to embark on new works of considerable scale, the project endeavors to launch artists into a new phase of creative development while breathing new life into the contemporary Korean art.

Following Lee Bul in 2014, Ahn Kyuchul in 2015, Kim Sooja in 2016, and Lim Heungsoon in 2017, Choi Jeonghwa(b.1961) has been selected as 2018’s representative artist. Choi Jeonghwa—also the art director of the 2018 PyeongChang Paralympics Winter Games that will open on Friday, March 9—presents various installations comprising cheap, plain objects used in everyday life, including plastic baskets, piggy banks, brooms, and balloons. By resurrecting mass-produced objects of consumption into works of art, Choi captures elements of Korean society by blurring the border between fine art and mainstream culture. He has thus expanded the horizons of post-’90s modern Korean art and is credited for exploring both regionality and universality in the international sphere. The exhibition of new works from Choi will be held in interior and exterior spaces of MMCA Seoul from Saturday, March 8 to Tuesday, February 5, 2019.

Five judges participated in the final screening process: Ahn So-yeon (former vice director of Plateau), Park Yeongtaik (professor at Kyonggi University), Choi Taeman (professor at Kookmin University), Bartomeu Marí (director of MMCA), and Kang Seungwan (chief curator at MMCA). The judges have ascertained that Choi is an internationally-recognized artist who effectively communicates with his audiences while capturing aspects of Korean society through a unique perspective and sensibility.

■ Gather Together, an event to present new works
As part of the museum’s project for new work, Choi Jeonghwa will showcase a project made entirely of used tableware and utensils at MMCA Seoul’s Museum Madang(Garden in Korean). Before construction of the project, which is expected to stand 8.4 meters tall, a two-day event will be held to collect used kitchenware on 31 Mar and 1 Apr 1 at the same location. In engraving the names of the former owners onto each piece of kitchenware, Choi wishes to create a public art project that integrates art and everyday life. Everyone is welcome to partake in the event and contribute all kinds of kitchenware, regardless of size or material, by utilizing the event’s donation booths. The resulting project will be exhibited on 8 Sep in MMCA Seoul.
