Lee Bul was selected as one of five 2019 Hoam Prize Laureates. The Hoam Prize is a Korean annual award presented to "domestic/abroad ethnic Korean who have made outstanding contributions to the development of science and culture and enhancement of the welfare of mankind". Starting in 1991, it is funded by Samsung and named after their former chairman, Lee Byung-chul. Representing Korean contemporary sculpture and installation art on the world art scene, Lee Bul showcased experimental mixed media and ambitious performing art in the late 1980s that fused imagination and reality. After her invitational exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1997, she was selected as one of artists for the Korean Pavilion at the Venice Biennale 1999, winning Special Mention. Currently, her work is exhibited at major art museums around the world. Through her artwork, she expressed resistance to social contradictions and prejudices while raising awareness about feminism. In recent years, she has continued to make a dramatic impact on the contemporary art world by experimenting in a range of arenas, such as technology and the future city.
