Co-organized by the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (MMCA, director Youn Bummo), and the SBS Foundation, Korea Artist Prize 2020 has selected and announced Kim Minae, Lee Seulgi, Jung Yoonsuk, and Chung Heesung as this year’s sponsored finalists. The selected artists have earned recognition in the art world through active exhibition of their works both in Korea and overseas.
Marking its ninth year, this year’s Korea Artist Prize has selected the four artists based on an evaluation by a committee of Korean and international art experts. The members of the evaluation committee are newly appointed every year and include overseas judges in order to reflect the various viewpoints in the ever-changing art world and to encourage international interest in Korean art.
The four artists selected to be sponsored by Korea Artist Prize 2020 have actively produced works in their respective fields of sculpture, installation, photography, and video. Kim Minae has produced site-specific installations that intervene in everyday environments as a way to address architectural spaces and the institutionalized art scene. Lee Seulgi, based in France since the early 1990s, has shed light on the formality of everyday objects by presenting traditional craft and folk art in contemporary contexts. Jung Yoonsuk has produced documentary videos that acutely penetrate individual lives and social issues in an attempt to define humaneness. Chung Heesung has explored the potential and limitations of photographic reproduction, introducing diverse works including installations incorporating photographs and text.
The exhibition Korea Artist Prize 2020 will be held from Friday, October 30, 2020, to Sunday, March 29, 2021, at MMCA Seoul, galleries 2, 3, and 4, presenting new works conceptualized and materialized by the four artists, and the final winner will be announced in December.
