Interview with Choi Daejin

Choi Daejin

It was a coincidence that Daejin Choi began working as an artist during his stay in France after finishing his studies in a different field. The artist says his artistic inspiration comes from his identity as a Korean who had not previously experienced art and the space of conflict created from his acceptance of art based on Western ideas during his 15-year-stay in France. Choi’s works deal with political and historical issues one would find familiar through the mass media. He studied art at Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’Arts de Paris-Cergy in Paris, France, and Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts de Lyon, France. Choi has held several solo exhibitions in France at Le musée de La Roche-sur-Yon in 2008 and Galerie Metropolis in 2010 and in Korea at Alternative Space LOOP in 2011 and Project Space Sarubia in 2012. He has also participated in a number of group exhibitions in France such as X-Mas Show at Ancien Musée de la Peinture in 2007, Dark Pearl at La Générale en Manufacture in 2009, and Drawing Now Paris at Carrusel du Louvre in 2011. The Centre National des Arts Plastiques of Paris, France, awarded Choi a fellowship for international artists in 2011, and the artist was awarded an international residency by Musée d'art contemporain de Lyon, France, in 2009 and a residency program by Seoul Art Space Mullae, Korea, in 2012.
